Welcome to Spellbound, where paranormal is the new normal.

The only magic Emma Hart believes in is caffeine and the power of the dryer to lose one sock per load. A public interest lawyer buried under a mound of student debt, Emma’s whole life has been one turn of bad luck after another.

Her streak seems to continue when she gets lost on the way to see a client in the remote Pocono Mountains. A chance encounter with a suicidal angel lands her in Spellbound, a town where supernaturals have been cursed to remain for centuries--probably not the best time for Emma to discover that she's actually a witch.

Between the recent murder of the town’s public defender, a goblin accused of theft, remedial witch classes, and the attention of one smoking hot vampire, Emma struggles to navigate this unfamiliar terrain without losing her mind...or her life.

Curse the Day is the first book in the Spellbound paranormal cozy mystery series.

This was a really fun book to read! It was whimsical, magical and entertaining. It was an unexpected pleasure. If you enjoy fantasy and the metaphysical but want something fun and light to distract you from the hard realities of life, you will enjoy this book. I found the assortment of characters to be interesting, but Emma captured my heart as she faced the upheaval of her life with feistiness and grace.

Curse the Day Spellbound Paranormal Cozy Mystery Book 1 edition by Annabel Chase Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I absolutely loved this book. I love Witch books but this is so different and so enjoyable. The characters are so unbelievable that they are believable. A town filled with all the supernatural beings there are. What a great idea. And the humor. I am so ready to read another. Please, keep them coming.
Very enjoyable read. I love the descriptions of who, what and where. My one problem was when Emma hired two sets of cleaning fairies. She had a completion between them and would hire the best set of cleaners, for her big dark mansion. It wasn't until I was through with 80% of the book and I don't know how many days, into the life of Emma did she mention how the fairies worked out and who won. I would have like her reaction when she returned the day of the cleaning. I kept waiting for it and wondered if I had somehow missed it.

The story was fun, funny and clean!
I like light-hearted stories containing paranormal characters, especially witches. This one was so good, I read the second one and pre-ordered the third book.
A young lady finds out, by accident, she a witch. She is saved from drowning by an Angel. They find he is unable take her back to the shore. Instead, he takes her to the magically hidden town where he lives, along with other paranormal people. That is when the fun begins.
I'm a huge fan of witchy cozy mysteries, and this new series has me so excited! Not only am I anxiously waiting on Book Two to be available, I want to live in Spellbound if only to meet all the cool characters first introduced in Book One. Without giving spoilers, I will say that if I ever had to be stuck in a town full of supernatural beings, I'd want to be stuck in Spellbound! Annabel Chase is a welcome addition to my , and I hit pre-order on all her books so that I'll get them as soon as they're ready!
Five stars for
• writing, action, plot, and characters that drew me in from the first page and kept me in Spellbound to the last page
• great humor seasoned with just the right amount of snark and balanced by a measure of more serious issues
• a mystery, not complex, but fun to puzzle over
• my favorite paranormal theme discovering and learning to use unexpected paranormal abilities
• an original paranormal world and one that manages to gently spoof the paranormal genre
• Emma being an intelligent, imperfect main character I would enjoy spending time with in the real world, along with many of the other characters
• great writing well done pacing, plot, world building, character development, and editing
• a most refreshing absence of crude language and graphic sex
• delightful twists, turns, and a snarky owl
• emerging from Spellbound to find myself smiling and content.
I look forward to returning to Spellbound via this book and the others in this series!
Curse the Day, by Annabel Chase, is a delightful paranormal cozy mystery, first in a series, set in the small town of Spellbound. Spellbound isn’t just any small town in rural Pennsylvania. It’s populated entirely by paranormals, everyone from angels to vampires, witches to were-ferrets. And none of them can leave—no one is entirely sure how or why, or even when the town was cursed, but cursed it is.

When underpaid and overworked lawyer Emma Hart stumbles into town (in the arms of a morose fallen angel), she has no idea that she’s anything but an ordinary human being. But when she tries to leave, she walks into an invisible but unbreakable barrier. The curse on Spellbound won’t release her, and the witches of the town recognize her as one of their own—and one badly in need of training. Before she can say abracadabra, Emma finds herself trying to learn the art of spell casting and trying to fill the now-empty shoes of the town’s public defender, a recently murdered vampire.

Emma is a snarky, self-deprecating, very funny narrator, and the supporting characters, from the apprentice witches (who are sharper than their elders realize) to the cranky centaur sheriff, night-golfing vampires to flea-conscious werewolves, are a hoot. I thoroughly enjoyed Curse the Day, and there are several more installments waiting to be read.
This story was awesome. The main character has a wonderful inner dialogue and is very relatable. I found her reactions to her crazy circumstances rang true and were very funny. I loved that the author borrowed a bit from Harry Potter but in ways that were like insider jokes rather than pathetic imitation. The town of Spellbound is a wondrous place to be.

I would love to share this series with my 12 year old daughter but some of the humor is not quite age appropriate. Maybe when she's 13 or 14. I'm just not ready to explain what an incubus is to a kid who still collects Legos, after all.

So this is kind of like a Harry Potter world for adults and teens. But don't worry, there is much that is different and fresh to keep it from feeling like a cheap wannabe Potterverse.
